
Type of laryngoscopes
Laryngoscopes are medical instruments used for examining and visualizing the larynx and vocal cords
they come in various designs, including direct laryngoscopes and video laryngoscopes.
Here are some general guidelines for finding the right laryngoscopes
- Types of Laryngoscopes
- generally there are 2 main types of laryngoscopes which is further divided in to 2 types,
- the first two types are “Conventional” laryngoscopes which contains the light bulb on the blade to illuminate the site under observation where as the other type “Fiber Optic” laryngoscopes
- which contains the light bulb in the handle and the light is transferred to blade & site under observation through optical fiber glass tube installed on the blade,
- Types of Blades
- the other division of the laryngoscope is types of blades which is Macintosh & Miller,
- Macintosh Blade (Curved Blade) The Macintosh blade is one of the most commonly used laryngoscope blades,
- It has a curved shape, which makes it suitable for lifting the epiglottis and exposing the vocal cords,
- It is available in various sizes, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 with size 3 and size 4 being the most commonly used for adults.
- Miller Blade (Straight Blade) The Miller blade is a straight laryngoscope blade,
- It is often preferred when there is a need to lift the epiglottis directly without bending it,
- The Miller blade is commonly used for pediatric patients and adults with difficult airways.
